melanie champagne debuts with the patient (and yes, dreamlike) “in my dreams”

you’ll know this feeling: you find a piece of art, maybe it’s a song, or a movie, or a short story, and you enjoy it so much your mind starts to race. “there has to be more of this,” you think, so you hit up google to try to find out more. i had a similar experience with this new melanie champagne song, “in my dreams.” it’s a single that is so fully-realized, so tastefully executed, that it’d be easy to assume that this recording artist has an entire back catalog behind them.

but that’s not the case. this is just the first single!

melanie champagne is a songwriter from bristol (ct, obv), who you may have seen playing solo at local events. and this song, “in my dreams”, is the first thing she’s publicly released: a ballad that is part-folk, part-alt-country, and part-indie. recorded at kingship recording studio in avon, the song features some guitar by frequent collaborator eric paradine. it’s a slow, beautiful track that unfolds very gently. as the name suggests, there is a dream-like quality to it, and the images that this song conjures in your head all move silently and in slow-motion. it’s gorgeous, sweet, and has a perfect melody (listen to those self-harmonies in the chorus!).

champagne has mentioned that there will be more music on the way, probably in the form of an ep, but she’s not rushing it. “i hope to put out more… as the songs come, but i don’t want to force it at all.” patience is a beautiful thing.
