the gnarled monkey paw closes, and your wish is granted: everyone has released new music (kim normal, fleurs, mighty tortuga, and more)

you whisper the words “i wish my favorite bands released new music” to the shriveled monkey paw.  you bought the trinket from an estate sale (rainy afternoon, widow cashier), and as you now make your final wish, one last finger curls shut.  how could that wish go wrong?  you listen, waiting for a sound — any sound — and then you hear it: a vibration on your phone.  your phone rumbles in one long continuous drone, its screen lightning up with one notification after another.  “oh my god,” you whisper, as you realize what has happened: every band in connecticut is releasing new music this weekend.

Fleurs: “Sucker”: we heard a great lead single from Fleurs just a couple of weeks ago. with a new album quickly on the horizon (just a few more weeks!), we get a second taste, this time as a smoky, dimly-lit ballad. if these two singles are any indication, LP2 will be knottier and naughtier than Life of the Appetite, with composition that are both darker and more complex.

Kim Normal: On Your Own Wave: the central connecticut wonderkind are here with their first full-length album. i’ve already gushed about one of its singles (“I Don’t Even Mind”), and the rest of the album promises to be full of big riffs, cool melodies, and a great, jagged ’90s revival vibe. i’m excited to sink my teeth in this one over the weekend after anticipating it for a few months now.

Brandon Schock: WACK: i don’t want this one to slide under your radar. i haven’t been able to digest this album completely yet, but Schock’s slanted pop music is so excellent. “Living Is Stupid”, for example, is a song that i replayed immediately as its final notes rang, not once, not twice, not thrice, but four times before i could even listen to any other song.

Mighty Tortuga: “Swear to God”: the turtles are back! their excellent ep Letting Go should still be fresh in your feed, and here’s another song to throw in your heavy rotation. the song plays to the band’s strengths: melodic emo, dueling vocalists, and a slick/sick rhythm section.

Dan Falkovich: “A Priori”: the UHart-based musician Dan Falkovich single is a gentle, stripped-back slow-burn. in its gradually-unfolding arrangement, it’s easy to close your eyes and allow Falkovich to move you down the river. i haven’t seen any hints at an upcoming ep/lp, but i’ll keep you posted.

Foxtails: Querida Hija: one of the first album profiles i ever wrote for this blog, Foxtails’ new album is now out for you to hear right now! the spacey-prog-screamo is dynamic and outrageously cathartic. released by emocat records, you can grab this one on vinyl (or cassette/digital)!

En Masse: “Sunspots” and “Insight”: it’s 2:30am and these two songs just hit bandcamp. i’m excited to hear it (En Masse’s bone-crushing punk metal is so good), but i have to get some sleep. listen to this one and let me know what you think!
