“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of New Haven. I watched Jason Rule glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like non-album singles on bandcamp. Time to die.”

Crag Mask, probably

A month or two ago, the official Crag Mask instagram changed its name to “Mesmer”. It was more than just a new name, they explained, this was a new band. And even though we were told that Crag Mask was over, it still didn’t really feel like it was over, did it? Even though the band said so; even though the band removed all of the old Crag content from the feed; even though the new band has already played shows. The Book of Crag wasn’t quite shut just yet. And today, we now have closure. We’ve seen the body.

Earlier this year, Crag Mask got together with Kicker Pictures and the State House to record a small live set (very similar to the set they recorded with The Tines!). It’s a fantastic send-off. Not only are the songs great (and quite different from the aggro Crag of Bend), but the accompanying video footage is a real treat. Check out the spinning chiaroscuro camerawork on the first song! The kinda-spooky interludes with the Lighthouse! The Miller cameo! It looks great and sounds great (recorded by Pat Dalton!). You can find it embedded below and currently on youtube. Don’t count on a streaming platform release of these songs just yet, because they may show up reinvented as Mesmer tunes…

In the meantime, check out Shyanne’s new record as Lumot (formerly just ‘SHY’). Weaver has been out for a few weeks, and it is absolutely worth your time. I know I say that about every Connecticut band, but for real, if I could only listen to one album this month, it would probably be Weaver.

Anyways, IDK what to do with the Crag Mask diss track that I’ve been sitting on for 9 months. Thanks Crag! I’m sorry about the constant cyberbullying. Maybe I’ll be nicer to you now that you’re ‘Mesmer’. You can’t spell Mesmer without ‘memes’.
