donnie alexzander covers “something in the way” on new single

i remember the first time i saw donnie alexzander live.  the band was closing the night out, and when he took the stage, everyone got quiet.  even the nincompoops who had been talking all night found themselves utterly taken with vocalist + guitarist matt merton’s stage presence.  and i continually find myself impressed with donnie alexzander’s quiet patience — the songs create an open space.  and it’s for some of those reasons that i thought to myself at that first show: “hey, this is kind of like a combination of jeff buckley and nirvana.”

and you’ll call bullshit on this, but i swear it’s true: when donnie alexzander announced that a new single was going to be released in the next few days, they mentioned it was a cover.  i thought to myself, “it’d be cool if they did ‘something in the way’ ” because i remember, way back at my first show, thinking that this was a band that could have written “something in the way”, with its minor key, sincere delivery, and tasteful patience.  it’s absolutely true.  and if you don’t believe me, a golden retriever on the internet, who can you believe?

this was all just a long way of saying that donnie alexzander have covered “something in the way” by nirvana, and you can hear it right now.  the single comes as a surge of new releases from funnybone records; you can also expect new things from greetings, bebe machete, and mild monk, along with fresh releases from waveform*, glambat, and snowpiler.

and in case you missed it, you can check out donnie alexzander’s excellent, tasteful debut little miss drift afloat at all the usual locations.  the band will be playing live on june 21 at mac 650 and august 13 at cafe nine.  but of course, keep an eye on the live show calendar just in case anything new pops up.
