rest in peace, The Church: love live The Church!  last year, Pasquale Liuzzi opened up The Church, a DIY venue in [REDACTED].  it was one of our very favorite venues to roll up at — you could always expect a good bill and friendly faces.  that same spirit, even if The Church is now closed, lives on with Ninth Square Records

Ninth Square Records is a new independent label that champions the same virtues of The Church: doing it for the love of the art. the current roster includes collaborations with several regulars at The Church: Waveform*, Pulsr, Doom Beach, Zebvlon, SELLER, and more. this month will be especially busy for Ninth Square, as they release both Aunts’ and Brunettes’ new records. unlike many of the quote unquote indie labels out their, Ninth Square isn’t interested in locking down rights on your master tapes (hi Tiny Engines). the partnerships formed with the label are more mom-and-pop handshake-type arrangements. the goal is to support, champion, and promote: not make themselves money off of your hard work.

to learn more about the new label, we got on the line with Pasquale to talk about Ninth Square, how an indie label can provide for aggressively-DIY bands, and why DIY venues are so important. we also talk about what we love about each band on the label’s roster!

A quick warning before we jump into the interview — this was initially recorded a couple of weeks before the coronavirus quarantine measures took place in Connecticut. Since that time, two new bands have joined the Ninth Square Records team: Aunts and Brunettes, both of which are putting out new music this month, May in the year of our lord 2020. Oh! And Cinema Stare just released their new album, Hum and the Glow, this week, as well, so you should check that out immediately. We were initially going to time the release of this episode with a special announcement from Ninth Square Records, but that announcement is being put on hold for the time being. So here’s what I want you to do: go to boot up your computer and go to ninthsquarerecords.bandcamp.com or follow them on social media so that you can hear about the big updates in the following weeks and months!
