the first time i saw evelyn gray perform was at the glambat / snowpiler / shy release show; she opened the night, playing with scarcely more than a guitar and loop pedal. and y’all, i don’t know the last time i’ve seen a crowd as absorbed by an opener as that set. her performance was raw, emotional, and personal. i remember standing next to someone who, after the second or third song, leaned over to me and whispered “holy fuck.” and today, gray has formally announced her first album: let the flower grow.

let the flower grow is slated for a july 27th release, both digitally and… vinylly. while the judges look in the rule book to see if “vinylly” is actually a word or something i just made up, you can help yourself to evelyn gray’s new music video of “take with food.” if you were lucky enough to check out her ep, tired, the song may be familiar to you, but even if you’ve heard it before, the video (shot by jamie lynn hitchcock) is a must-see. the album was recorded and mixed with sam carlon of sans serif recording.

on evelyn gray’s facebook post announcing the album, she writes that the album: “is a collection of songs taht explore queerness and trans identity, vulnerability, visibility, self-acceptance, and authenticity.” some of these songs were previewed on tired, so if you may know how powerful they are. the album is complete with some really awesome liner notes (click through to bandcamp to preview them). check gray’s facebook + our live calendar for upcoming live shows; i don’t think there have been any formally announced yet, but once they are, you will not want to miss them.
