“ugh,” you say, “i’m so sick of indie rock.”  i can hear the ironic italics in your voice.  well friend, let me lay two new singles on you that will cure your lame indie rock blues.

thejudasobscure – “this night could swallow me whole”

as far as “one man bands” go, i’m sure you’ve heard your fair share.  your country crooners, your electronica djs, your synthpop poets.  i’ll go out on a limb, though, and predict you’ve never heard a screamo/folk/noise one-man-band. but that’s exactly what thejudasobscure is.  based out of waterbury, this unique hybrid is preparing for a EP/album — Charlatan — release next month.  to give you a taste of that EP, thejudasobscure has released “this night could swallow me whole”, a song that is as brutal as its name suggests.  described as “a song about passive suicidality”, the song breaks through any kind of normal song conventions, opening up with some noise samples before launching into a start-and-stop distorted bass riff.  each corner of the song is jagged, and with no traditional verse-chorus structure, the song feels unpredictable and dangerous.  in addition to “this night could swallow me whole”, the band has also released a b-side, “cactus uncle” that was also recorded in the Charlatan sessions.

matt falkowski – “useless / acrylic”

matt falkowski will keep you on your toes. right as Bad Posture was release, falkowski teased that new songs for a new record were already recorded. that upcoming album, Paint, is almost hear, and falkowski has already previewed one recording from it: listen here. and you may have noticed that i used the phrase “recording”, rather than song, right? that’s because if you’ve gone to any of their live shows, you’ll have heard other songs from Paint! one of my favorites, “useless / acrylic”, slyly showed up on spotify right before the weekend. you can stream it now (see below)! it’s a two-for-one deal, as the cool “useless” quickly morphs into more-rowdy “acrylic” midway through. “useless” even references a song from the previous record (“coffee” on Bad Posture) by mentioning the previous song’s self-hosted “pity party”. and the song even sounds like it could have been on that album, whereas “acrylic” sounds more like what we’ve heard with “paint.” what both sides of this song share, though, is falkowski’s gift for lyrics and passionate delivery. go on and check it out, and get ready for Paint later this month!
