oh whoops, i think i gave away all of the surprises in the title.  that’s okay.  keep reading, and i will tell you a secret if you get to the end of this post.  yesterday, stereogum premiered a new Sean Henry song!  the song, “Rain, Rain”, is the first track from the newly announced A Jump From The High Dive, which is set to come out on the first of november.  yes, that’s right this november.  his last record, Fink, came out a little more than a year ago, and even though he teased that he was writing new music in Connecticut earlier this year, i didn’t expect to hear the new material so soon!  the album will be released, like Fink, through Double Double Whammy records, who has a stellar reputation/track record.

but chances are i didn’t need to tell you that.  some of y’all have known Sean Henry since he was releasing music as Boy Crush or High Pop, so you know he’s a fantastic songwriter already.  “Rain, Rain” is a soft, beautiful pop song, with a simple, straight-forward chorus that gets lodged in your head the moment you hear it.  now the stereogum premiere says that Sean would sing this as a child in hopes that it would conjure up a rain cloud so that he could get out of playing baseball.  i’ll assume their reporting is off — who would not want to play baseball?  at any rate, the song is another cool example of how S.H.’s music pulls from memory fragments, often from childhood, to create new music.  you can feel that nostalgia, that innocence, in his music, and it is with no exaggeration that i tell you that “Rain, Rain” has become one of my favorite songs by Sean Henry already.
