photo by jessica pohl. well, this is interesting. fat randy and king bongo are two of connecticut’s strangest (and best) bands. fat randy are like mad scientists, fusing genre, satire, and comedy into a supremely-entertaining frankenstein’s monster (a fatrandystein’s monster, if you will), and king bongo craft beautifully playful psychedelic music. what both of these bands have in common is that they opening up for david liebe hart on september 11, 2019 at the state house. for some of you, that name will be instantly familiar; how could you forget the delightful ventriloquist musician from adult swim’s tim & eric awesome show? for those of you not in the know, here’s his promotional tour video:
if that’s confusing — that’s ok! part of DLH’s magic is that feeling of bewilderment. his live show even begins with a large projected image that declares “confusion is a condition of enlightenment”. for me, watching his performances are like being a small child and picking up an encyclopedia. you turn the pages, and you see all sorts of information in form of text, pictures, and diagrams. you know what some of it means, but a lot of it, you aren’t quite sure. so your imagination starts weaving a story of it all, trying to make sense of what you just saw. so when david liebe hart sings impassioned songs about extraterrestrials, ghosts, and trains, you just go with it. don’t try to analyze it — just let your subconscious fit it all together.
hart’s show is billed as appearing with chip the black boy (the puppet in the above video) and whatever your heart desires (both acts that include DLH). the tour will be a variety show of sorts in support of his new album that he made in collaboration with jonah mociun, space ranger, an album that is psychedelic, strange, fascinating, and supremely fun. it will be an unpredictable, weird show: don’t fight the confusion — embrace it!
