tonight! help cafe 9 by watching this connecticut tribute to johnny cash

today and today only: you can help New Haven’s Cafe 9 by buying a ticket to see the new documentary My Darling Vivian — it’s a documentary about Johnny Cash’s first wife, Vivian Liberto (who has mostly been left out of the myth-making of Cash’s career).  the movie has a rotten tomatoes score of 95% fresh, which makes it fresher than Walk The Line (82%), which I haven’t seen, but my dad, who has caught snippets of it on TNT, says is pretty good.  hell, that score is higher than Shawshank Redemption (90%), The Dark Knight (94%), and Billy Madison (40%).

you can check out the link HERE

so hey, that’s pretty cool right? basically you put some money in Cafe 9’s tip jar, and you get a free movie. rad. but wait! there’s more! if you do that, you also get a whole smorgasbord of Connecticut musicians covering Cash’s music. and maybe you’ll say: “but ct verses, ‘smorgasbord’ is a bit too subjective, can you be more specific before i commit?”. to which i would reply: “hold my PBR.”

you’ve got performances from:
Alex Burnett (from Laundry Day)
Amy Rigby
Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys
Bill Janovitz
Bruce Crowder & Loralee Geil
Casey James Prestwood
Christine Ohlman (the Beehive Queen)
Dust Hat
Frank Critelli
John Howie Jr.
Lydia Loveless
Lys Guillorn
Matthew Ryan
Mercy Choir
Patrick Dalton (from the Proud Flesh)
Richard Hulett (from Big Bad Johns)
Rick Allison
Sam Carlson (from S.G. Carlson and Ports of Spain)
Sarah Shook
Shellye Valauskas
The Split Coils
The Dollyrots
The Zambonis

i know, right? it’s a ton of great musicians. some of them i know and love well, others are new to me, and i’ll be excited to experience for the first time. they’ll all be covering Johnny Cash tunes, so i am hoping to hear Mercy Choir cover Johnny Cash’s cover of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage”. or maybe The Zambonis will turn “Ring of Fire” into a hockey themed “Rink of Fire”?

but if movies and live music are not your thing (… then how did you find your way here?), you can also order some killer Cafe 9 t-shirts. they’re a limited run, so you should order soon. you can find them on their social media pages, like this one: https://www.facebook.com/cafenineNH/posts/10157059602546486

support Cafe 9 and other music venues in Connecticut so that they’ll still be there.
