premiere: youth xl remind you in their debut single to “text your friends”

We’ve been waiting for this day.  Several months ago, the Sans Serif Studio instagram account leaked some in-studio footage of Youth XL, confirming that the New Haven band had a new record in the works.  Today, Youth XL debuts their first song, “Text Your Friends”, ahead of their debut album.  Baby’s first song!  Check out the embed below:

Even though Youth XL is a brand-spanking new band, you may have seen lead hunk Alex McGuire previously performing under his own name, releasing two EPs, and even a video for the super-catchy “Summer Bummer”.  The new band is rounded out with Dominick Gregoretti on guitars, Michael Saunders on bass, and Shaun Larson on drums.  The band’s name is a reference to McGuire’s height, he says, “I can fit into Youth XL at most major clothes stores.  But it’s also the idea of taking your insecurities and making them your strengths.”

While “Text Your Friends” was written before the Shittiest Year On Record, its message is prescient.  Connect with your friends!  Don’t let them drift away.  They might need you right now.  Even cool music bloggers can feel alone and disconnected when a dear friend goes off the grid completely.  [You hear that, Jess G. from high school?!]  And that’s what I love about “Text Your Friends” — not only is it a smooth, beautiful song, but it’s absolutely sincere and open.  They may be “Connecticut’s funnest band“, but they may also be the sweetest.

“Text Your Friends” was recorded by Sans Serif Recording and mastered by Andi Jones (from the band Ther). Awesome cover art by Andrew Salerno. You can find more Youth XL at their bandcamp now!  And while you wait on their upcoming album, you can follow them on social media / keep an eye out for a new music video.  [eyes emoji]
