on fathers’ day, everybody on instagram was goofing off, posting silly pictures of their dad’s mullet. but in that barrage of mustaches and sunglasses, one post stuck out: nudette announced that by midnight, a new album would be uploaded to bandcamp. this was a surprise, but it wasn’t completely off brand for nudette whose diy music welcomes these off-the-cuff, chance encounters. for example, 2018’s unseen by all is simply listed as “an album about my life at the moment”, or the 4-track ep kenzie’s dorm ghost: cryptid hunt 2019, which was a extemporaneous release prompted by a chance interest in ghosts.
the new album, get warm! (c-sides) is a continuation of these themes. the first track, for example, “gutter punks in hartford” is all about a daily routine interrupted (in this case, the titular punks are absent outside of a cvs one day). from there, the observations spiral in ever-widening circles, so that by the end of the song, nudette has thought not only about hartford, but new york city, the rapture, and simple messages of kindness. that’s a lot for a little over a minute of song-time, right?
and what i really like about nudette’s get warm! (c-sides) is this immediacy. you feel close to him because you can feel him record the music in real-time. every now and again, you’ll hear a crackling of the microphone or a bum note, but those little scars allow his music to feel like more than just a recording. you can probably make easy comparisons to the moldy peaches’ mid 2000’s stripped-bare, stream-of-consciousness folk music. but i was also reminded a lot community college from massachusetts, whose debut came out this year.
