not long ago, i posted about the zh1 foxtails session — this week, zh1 has recorded proxima centauri, a progressive post-hardcore band. the three-piece shares some sonic qualities with foxtails, particular in the guitarwork, which is equal parts shred and indiosyncratic phrasing. proxima centauri is chris kilbourn (guitar), justin blau (bass), and dan michaud (drums) — all three dudes with a crazy-talented, individualized style of performance. their facebook page advises that they are looking for a fourth (a vocalist) to complete the lineup, yet the video is highly entertaining even with this “missing” position. the band are restless, never hanging onto any musical phrase for too long before dashing onto something else. the zh1 session feels almost like an extended suite of guitar-forward prog, but without any kind of pretention of self-indulgence that sometimes comes associated with that genre (hey, don’t get mad, i like prog rock).
